History & Background
EMLC was established in October 1991 originally to meet the legal needs of low income black and ethnic minority communities living in Glasgow. Initially funded through the Urban Programme by Strathclyde Regional Council and the Scottish Office we developed our services within the City and successfully secured continued funding from the Glasgow City Council following local government reorganisation in 1996.
In 1997 we successfully applied to the Scottish Office for a grant to establish a pilot project and offer our services within a wider area of Glasgow and to six areas immediately out with the City; East Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire, and Argyll and Bute. Originally funded for two years the pilot was given an extension until the end of March 2000. We have now secured funding from the Community Fund for a further three years with the support of East Ayrshire Council, East Dunbartonshire Council, West Dunbartonshire Council, North Lanarkshire Council, Renfrewshire Council as services extend to ten local authorities in west of Scotland in addition to Glasgow. |
A new office was opened in Edinburgh in late 2006 for clients from Scotland's capital city, and service provision was extended to the Highland Council area in 2007. This service can be accessed by phone and email advice via the Glasgow office, and outreach surgeries are held on a regular basis in the Highland area. Details of dates, times and venues are available from the EMLC’s Glasgow office.
