Support & Information for female victims of abuse
pic

With the generous support of Glasgow City Council, the EMLC has been funded to provide support and information to female victims of abuse.
Our female support worker can provide:

  • Support & Information in a bi-lingual and culturally sensitive setting.

  • Referrals to other specialist agencies, if appropriate.

  • Advocacy Support

  • A free independent confidential service

It is the Law Centre’s experience that the majority of our female clients who are asylum seekers or refugees have undergone traumatic gender violence in their country of origin.

At the present 60% of our client base have been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or depression as a result of their experiences from the country which they have fled. Most of our clients have either been personally subjected to, or have witnessed family members having been subjected to serious physical, mental and sexual violence or torture. Many have been raped, often more than once and by more than one person.

This results both in psychological scarring and often physical harm such as HIV infection which in turn causes psychological suffering.

Many have suffered torture both physical and psychological. Many have witnessed a loved one being killed or tortured or have been threatened with similar treatment. Most have suffered gender discrimination, and frequently originate from societies where problems such as domestic violence and female genital mutilation are commonplace and not addressed by the authorities. Most of our female clients have suffered at least one of these forms of trauma, many have suffered several.

It is therefore not surprising that rates of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and depression are so high amongst asylum seekers and refugees.

Many of these women are alone, or just with their children, in a strange country where they do not speak the language. They have left their family, homes and possessions behind and often feel lonely and isolated. Many are not aware of what help is available to them.

If you need someone to talk to, telephone for an appointment and have a chat with our female support worker:
